BAYSIDE COOKOUT
Clark Terry - music
Les Harris, Jr - lyrics
It’s that time of year
To head out to the Bayside cookout.
I’ll bring my horn and celebrate
No time to hesitate
It’s time to pack the car and hit the road.
Gettin’ all my friends together
At the Bayside cookout.
A time for friends and family
Been waiting patiently
To get to play some jazz with my old friends.
My family has a beach house, and it overlooks the bay.
We’ll grab a bite to eat then we’ll play.
We’ll play ‘til the end of the day.
Now the band is really cooking at the Bayside cookout
No need to stop or turn it down
The neighbor’s out of town.
The band might just keep playing ‘til it’s light.
Let’s start playing,
Pick up your horn and let’s get down to swinging.
We’ll start with a slow blues.
Count it off and play an intro,
Then all jump in and get it cooking.
First the sax, then the bone, then the bass, then the drums. Then take the coda to the end, we’ll play the turnaround, stretch it out, trading fours, keep it swing-in’.
Coming on break time!
Put your horn down and get in the line.
The food looks good, I can’t wait.
Dig into some ribs and macaroni salad.
Corn bread, and some chicken with barbecue sauce.
I’m in Heaven right now!
All my family friends and favorite musicians,
We gather every year down by the bay and then we eat and drink and play some music, it’s the party no one misses. Good to see brothers sisters and all my aunts, uncles too all my cousins and their kids, having a good time, sharing the day, all of our friends, spreading good vibes.
It’s rare when we can all be in one place. Feeling the love.
Plenty of time to play some more tunes now.
We’ll play on through the night.
And we’ll keep cooking till it’s morning.
Kick off the tune and let’s keep partying crowd is up on their feet and dancing now,
Gotta keep ‘em eating and drinking and singing and dancing and swinging until morning!
