THE VOICE OF CLARK TERRY, volume 1
Liner Notes
Jazz singer Chris Humphrey created this recording with drummer Les Harris, Jr. as a labor of love in tribute to the great jazz trumpeter Clark Terry. Clark Terry was one of the only musicians to play with both Duke Ellington and Count Basie’s orchestras. His sound on the trumpet and flugelhorn is immediately recognizable and his roots in the blues and soulfully felt music are deep and rich. Clark Terry was given an honorary PHD from the University of NH in 1978 and was a regular presence on the campus for many years before his death in 2015. Chris and Les were both on the faculty at UNH when Clark would have his many residencies and played with him many times. Les has written lyrics to Dr. Terry’s compositions and many of his improvised solos.
One Foot in The Gutter is taken from the Dave Bailey Sextet’s 1960 recording of the same name on the Epic label. Digits, Serenade to a Bus Seat, and Cruisin’ are all from Clark’s 1957 recording “Serenade to a Bus Seat” on the Riverside label, (featuring most of Miles Davis’s rhythm section from that time). Bayside Cookout is from the 1978 recording, “Funk Dumplin’s” by The Clark Terry Quartet on the Matrix label. Ode to Pres is from a 1979 recording by the Count Basie Octet on the Pablo label titled “Get Together”. Co-Op is from Clark Terry’s first recording as a leader from 1955 on EmArcy. Sheba is from Clark’s 1991 recording, “Live at The Village Gate”. Cote D’ Azur is from the recording, “Pablo All-Star Jam” recorded live at the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival. Chat Qui Peche (A Cat That Fishes), is from a 1960 Clark Terry recording titled “Color Changes”. The Snapper is from a 1990 recording on the Delos label titled, “Having Fun”. And FUN WAS HAD making this music through our collective respect and love of the great Clark Terry!
